Why choose Foundation 1 or 2 at Black Horse Hill Infant School?

Excellent transition procedures and links with local nurseries mean that children and parents know our setting very well before they start in Foundation 1 (at age 3) or Foundation 2 (at age 4).

Children attend in small groups at first so that staff get to know them and their families as individuals. What each child knows, and how they learn, is assessed through games and fun activities and then learning plans are made which encompass all abilities and help each child to achieve the next steps in their learning.

Our children achieve very highly, and they have fun in the process. Play is at the heart of what we do here at Black Horse Hill Infant School - we believe in child-centered learning through play. We recognise that young children learn best by 'doing' and by being active, and this is reflected in all aspects of our teaching. We aim to give our children the best possible start to their education.

Our friendly, caring staff have spent many years teaching young children and are available at the start and end of every day to discuss how your child is settling in. We have a wonderful outdoor learning area to which all children have access every day.Children can choose from a sandpit, mini-trampoline, rope bridge, tyres for climbing on, a stage with curtains, a bike trail, a digging pit, a music tree, football goal, water wall, construction area...the list is endless! Seasonal changes are reflected in our range of mature trees, shrubs and flowers, and the area is securely fenced in and unseen from the road.

Teaching is through topics - these are changed to reflect the children's interests, but would typically include 'Pirates and Mermaids', 'Dinosaurs' and 'The Circus'. We follow the Early Years Foundastion Stage curriculum, details of which can be found at‎ The curriculum consists of 7 areas of equal importance:

Expressive Arts and Design

Parents / carers are invited to a Parent-Teacher meeting in the Autumn and Spring terms to talk about thier child's progress and give ideas for how to help at home. In the summer term a detailed report will be sent out that evaluates the child's achievement in each of the 7 areas of learning as described above. We also invite parents to meetings, usually in the evenings, showing how to help their child at home in particular areas such as mathematics or reading. Many parents find it useful to see how and what we teach.
